The Robeson County Sheriff’s Office asked the N.C. State Bureau of Investigation to take over an alleged hazing case involving the Fairmont High School baseball team.

The sheriff’s office launched an investigation on February 23 after receiving two reports about an incident that occurred on a school bus the week before, Sheriff Burnis Wilkins said Thursday.  One report came from a parent and another from Public Schools of Robeson County.

The alleged incident began in Cumberland County and continued in Robeson County following a game against Seventy-First High School in Fayetteville, Wilkins said in a statement posted on social media.

Wilkins did not give details about the alleged hazing or say how many players were involved. He said local investigators met with local District Attorney Matt Scott and school administrators on Monday.

“Following these meetings, the decision was made to transfer the case to the North Carolina State Bureau of Investigation due to jurisdictional concerns,” he said.

Jessica Sealey, spokesperson for Robeson County schools, said the district declined to comment because the investigation was “ongoing.”
