The Border Belt Independent was recognized during the North Carolina Press Association’s annual awards banquet on Thursday.

The news outlet won third place for general excellence in the online division. General excellence is the highest award given by the NCPA.

Staff also won second place for community coverage in the online division.

Reporter Ben Rappaport won third place for election/political reporting for a story about voters in Scotland County.

Carli Brosseau, a reporter with The Assembly, and Sarah Nagem, editor of the Border Belt Independent, were recognized with the Henry Lee Weathers Freedom of Information Award for their pursuit of public records in Columbus County.
