Two Bladen County school board members, including the chairman, lost in Tuesday’s primary election.

Board Chairman Mackie Singletary lost to Walter Hester in the Republican primary for the District 2 seat. Hester won 53.83% of the vote, and Singletary won 46.17%, according to unofficial results from the N.C. State Board of Elections.

No Democrats are running for the seat, so Hester will almost assuredly be the winner in the November general election.

Board member Gary Rhoda lost the Democratic primary for District 1. Theresa Jacobs won 56.94% of the vote to beat Rhoda, who got 43.06%. No Republicans are running.

Sheriff’s Race

Bladen County Sheriff Jim McVicker won the Republican primary and will face Democratic challenger Chris Hunt in the general election in November.

McVicker, who has been sheriff since 2014, won 79% of the vote to beat Carl Yonge.

Yonge told the Border Belt Independent on Wednesday that this won’t be the last time voters see his name on the ballot: “I’ll be back in four years,” he said.

Hunt won 68.94% of the vote in the Democratic primary to beat Gary Edwards.

New District Attorney

J.K. Somers won the Republican primary for the district attorney seat that serves Brunswick, Bladen, and Columbus counties.

Somers, a lawyer based in Bolivia, got 52.69% of the vote while Jenna Earley got 47.31%, unofficial results show. No Democrats are running.

Current District Attorney Jon David, who did not seek reelection, endorsed Earley.
